Avery is a PhD student specializing in bird population dynamics, with a focus on the effects of urban development and human activities in Vancouver, British Columbia. He earned both his BSc and MSc in Environmental Science from the University of Washington. For his master’s thesis, Avery investigated the impacts of recreational activities on tundra-breeding birds in Denali National Park, Alaska. Before joining the University of British Columbia (UBC), Avery worked as an avian field technician in Yosemite National Park and Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, contributing to various avian research projects. His work has involved several species, including Spotted Owls, Great Grey Owls, Sierra Nevada Red Fox, and Wolverine.

Outside of research, Avery enjoys climbing, hiking with his family, and traveling to expand his birding life list, which currently includes 1,500 species
